School readiness = self regulation learning competence?
Excellent review article on the relationship between the development of self-regulated learning strategies/competence and school readiness. Having worked in the schools as a school psychologist for 12 years, I would like to have a buck for every time a kindergarten teacher described children who where struggling in terms of self-regulation--although they did not use that term. A must ready for anyone working with preschool and early elementary students and stuff.

Consistent with the research in this article, have proposed that the training of attentional control (aka, controlled attention) may hold "one" (of multiple) keys to why some brain training programs may be effective.
You can find a MindHub Pub white paper where I lay out this information here.
Also, other AC related posts at the Brain Clock blog can be found at the following two links. Sorry for the two links with overlap. I need to do some blog maintenance.

Article: The Real Neuroscience of Creativity - with comments and FYI
I agree with Scott Barry Kaufman on the importance of the default brain network. However, at times one needs to learn how to shut down the default network "on demand" and invoke the executive control network. I have written a white paper on this topic, in the context of trying to explain how Interactive Metronome appears to help people train their abilities to "quiet the busy mind", which is available at the following link. It also covers the three brain networks discussed by Scott in his article at the Huffington Post. Enjoy.

IQ and state level innovation and growth: Does where you live make a difference
Interesting study in the latest issue of Intelligence that suggests a link between state-level IQ and growth and innovation. Of course, this looks good to me as I live in MN (see last figure). That being said, the R-squared values must be interpreted appropriately. They are in the mid .50s to high .60's, which indicates that the variables included as predictors in this investigation accounted for 25% to approximately 45% of the innovation dependent variable. That is large and statistically significant, but it indicates (aside from the fact that this is a correlational and not experimental study--correlation does not prove causality) that there are many other variables that need to be considered. It is a complex multivariate issue.

Motivational readiness: Crossing the rubicon to learning
Very interesting and important article on "motivational readiness" just published. Abstract and a few figures below (click to enlarge). The concept of moving from "readiness" to "action" is very similar to "crossing the rubicon of learning" as per the MACM model (Model of Academic Competence and Motivation) as articulated in MindHub Pub1. More information, including this MindHub Pub, can be found at the "Beyond IQ" section of the MindHub web portal.

Word retrieval/access--let kids use their hands to gesture
Does Head Start improve g (general intelligence) or just unique subtest variance?
Interesting meta-analysis of Head Start IQ studies that suggests that improvements in IQ scores in Head Start evaluation programs are not due to changes in general intelligence (g), but are more due to short-term and transient changes to unique, specific abilities of subtests in IQ tests.
