Abstract (click here)
This chapter provides a clinical reasoning framework to guide case conceptualization and decision-making in the context of a referral for a suspected learning disability (SLD). It offers a summary of foundational information considered necessary to inform decisions regarding SLD status, including the history of SLD, theory, research, data gathering, hypothesis testing, data interpretation, and linking evaluation results to evidence-based recommendations and interventions. The subcomponents of this framework are operationalized via a case study. This chapter concludes with a brief discussion of how to reach a threshold of confidence or a reasonable degree of certainty in the final SLD/not SLD decision.
